First, just to be clear, I don't really feel that this is the book that you'd want to buy if you were looking for one book to use to teach yourself to knit. I think that you could do it, because about all of the information you could need is in there. Still, most people who are just teaching themselves to knit are going to want a more narrative format that deliberately leads you through the details of knitting as you need them.

As the title implies, this book is actually an answer book. It has a huge array of nearly any question the typical person will ever ask about how to do something in knitting and then the author very directly answers the question. It's really a fantastically convenient format for what it's meant to do, since with other books I've always had to look up a topic in the index (sometimes hoping that I know the exact term that they'd be using) and then go to all the pages where that topic was discussed to try to figure out which one has the information I need. This is much more simple and direct.

The physical format of the book is also very well thought out. It's thick but fairly small in height and width compared to most books, which makes it a much better size for tucking into a knitting to carry around than most knitting books I've seen. The size probably isn't going to be terribly comfortable to most people, however, if you want to just sit and read the book straight through. Keep that in mind when you're thinking about what you want from a book and what you intend to do with it.

What's great about this book, really, is that it was designed to be extremely good at the one thing that it's meant to do rather than trying to be mediocre at everything at once in order to reach a larger audience. If what you need is a small and easily carried book that you can take with you for quick reference, this will probably serve you very well. If you're looking for a step-by-step guidebook with some friendly banter mixed in, this isn't the one.
