Whenever I knit anything for babies, I love the yarn is soft and supple. For washcloth, use a cotton yarn. They are completely washable and keeps to the point.
In a few stores, I have also seen terrycloth yarn, which another good idea for baby article. But for the baby washcloths that I knit, cottonYarn is to use the best yarns. Sugar 'n Cream, Peaches' n Cream or Cotton Tots are my recommendations for the best knitting yarn, cotton.
